Ballantyne went to Canada aged 16, and spent five years working for the Hudson\'s Bay Company. A UK-wide banking crisis in 1825 resulted in the collapse of the Ballantyne printing business the following year with debts of £130,000, which led to a decline in the family\'s fortunes. In 1832-33 the family is known to have been living at 20 Fettes Row, in the northern New Town of Edinburgh. Alexander was a newspaper editor and printer in the family firm of "Ballantyne & Co" based at Paul\'s Works on the Canongate, and Robert\'s uncle James Ballantyne (1772–1833) was the printer for Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. He was also an accomplished artist, and exhibited some of his water-colours at the Royal Scottish Academy Ballantyne was born in Edinburgh on 24 April 1825, the ninth of ten children and the youngest son, to Alexander Thomson Ballantyne (1776–1847) and his wife Anne (1786–1855).
Overall, I'm beyond pleased with the writings of Miss Holman once again and would love to give this book a five out of five star review.Robert Michael Ballantyne (24 April 1825 – 8 February 1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction who wrote more than 100 books.
I absolutely loved the overall plot of this book.Īs always, I wish these stories were longer!!! I always wish I could delve into these stories for a much longer time, getting to know the characters better and really get into their world. I am an absolute sucker for romance stories, especially Cinderella stories! This story brought out the little girl in me, the one that would love to dream about Prince Charming and far away lands. While this is a retelling of a classic fairy tale, there was still a lot of room for certain liberties and twists and turns! *smile* It was well thought out, grammatically correct, and flowed ever so nicely. The writing style in this short story captured me from the first sentence. With such a short story there is not a lot of time to develop characters, but I found that the main characters in this story were still given time to mature, and develop in order to help the story proceed smoothly. So over the course of the next few weeks I'd like to be able to talk about each one of these fantastic and well-written books so that my lovely readers can find out just how inspiring these books truly are (and so you can get a hold of them and read them too!)
As I was deciding what I was going to read I found that my Kindle was entirely full with books from this lovely lady that were sitting unread!! (A shock to me as well, let me tell you!) So I spent the day reading as many as I could.yep one whole day. I recently took a day off from my normal routine to just sit and read. Not only is she a talented author who captivates the attention of all of her readers, but she is a wonderful daughter of God. Today I am very excited to be able to review Waltz into the Waves by Sarah Holman. I wouldn't say it's my favorite Cinderella tale ever, but I’m giving it 5 stars all the same because overall I just adored it! <3
I read it in like twenty minutes, so it was very short, but packed so much in despite that. Overall, this is a very brief but absolutely sweet little short story, a touching and romantic retelling of Cinderella. I loved the hero, Alex, who was epic, charming, and kind, genuinely caring about Amelia he was great! Plus, their relationship had some super sweet moments! :) *hugs little tale* There are some tough scenes but so much adorableness as well. Featuring an awesome castle (loved the descriptions!), a lovely masked ball, and sea-side scenes too. I don’t mind magical fairytales but this one did the Cinderella story without a magical fairy godmother and some of the other trappings of the original story, while still being recognizably Cinderella-ish. Told in first person (I’m not sure if I’ve read a tale by Miss Holman written in first person, before?), about Amelia (the Cinderella character) and her friend Alex (the charming fellow who occasionally lives next door), it covers a lot of ground and time surprisingly quickly. Aww, that was adorable! ^_^ I had actually read this once before, a couple years ago, and remember vaguely liking it, but I decided to reread and review it, and I absolutely loved it this time! ^_^
